The Hanging Church derives its name from its location above the gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, an ancient Roman fortress situated in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo). Its nave is uniquely suspended over a passage. Access to the church is gained by ascending twenty-nine steps, leading early travelers to Cairo to affectionately call it “the Staircase Church.” Over time, the ground level has risen approximately six meters since the Roman era, resulting in the Roman tower being predominantly buried underground.
